What is the underground economy? 1.It is not something subterranean. It is neither a physical structure nor a place. The pejorative term "underground economy" is used to describe the activities of buying and selling that occur beyond the purview of authorities. Typically the goods or services that are exchanged include, among others, drugs, sex, electronics, software, movies, music, and building-construction services. 2.Markets are processes involving the interplay of buyers and sellers. When the role of government is restricted to protecting persons and private property against aggression and theft, market processes transpire without impediment. Consumption opportunities are ...

Apple has sent a clear message to any developers who try to game its iTunes App Store. Software developer Molinker has been kicked out, along with more than 1,000 of its iPhone applications. The Chinese developer had, according to some estimates, 1,000-plus applications in the store, most of which were copycat knockoffs of existing applications. When the friend of writers at the iPhoneography photography blog saw these rather poor applications consistently scoring 5-star reviews, they got suspicious. Some investigation showed that Molinker’s applications were getting many top ratings and almost nothing in the 2-to-4-star range. In fact, the only other ratings were often ...

"The inherent problems of the international economic system have not been fully addressed," said China's president Hu Jintao. Indeed not. China is still exporting overcapacity to the rest of us on a grand scale, with deflationary consequences. While some fret about liquidity-driven inflation, Justin Lin, World Bank chief economist, said the greater danger is that record levels of idle plant almost everywhere will feed a downward spiral of job cuts and corporate busts. "I'm more worried about deflation," he said. By holding the yuan to 6.83 to the dollar to boost exports, Beijing is dumping its unemployment abroad – "stealing American ...

Apparently, the U.S. government didn't have enough Goldman Sachs executives in key financial and regulatory positions, so the following happened this week: A Goldman Sachs executive has been named the first chief operating officer of the Securities and Exchange Commission's enforcement division. The market watchdog says Adam Storch, vice president in Goldman Sachs' Business Intelligence Group, is assuming the new position of managing executive of the SEC division. The move comes as the SEC revamps its enforcement efforts following the agency's failure to uncover Bernard Madoff's massive fraud scheme for nearly two decades despite numerous red flags. A Goldman ...

MYFOXNY.COM - How early is too early for Christmas marketing? Apparently it's not July for Sears Holdings Company. The company owns Sears and Kmart. It has opened an online holiday store and Christmas boutiques at hundreds of stores. The company hopes to nudge consumers into starting their holiday shopping early and use the retailer's lay-a-way plan. Lay-a-way plans allow shoppers to pay for items over an extended period before they actually take the merchandise home. Sears reintroduced the program year-round in January. The Christmas Lane section of the Web site is linked off of the homepage and features holiday decor, gifts and an offer for free shipping on purchases over $75. ...

• George Green (24 February 2009) Click here to download We called George Green for an update on the state of the global economy. We recommend that George's views be considered along with Dr Bill Deagle's (see below) - and also with a very recent update from Lindsey Williams, the author of the controversial and potentially most important book Energy Non-Crisis. Lindsay specifically states that this recent interview (done not with us, but with The Byte Show) is not copyrighted, and we consider this update from Lindsey to be the most detailed and informative interview he has yet done. For anyone following George Green's and Bill Deagle's economic warnings, ...
